On World Communion Sunday, October 4, 1964 the first service of the future First Presbyterian Church was held in the Cove Theater with Rev. J. Berkeley SoRelle leading the service and 39 people attending. The church was officially organized on February 13, 1965 when 52 members signed the charter and petitioned the Presbytery of Alamo to organize into a church.
The Presbytery (now Mission Presbytery) appointed Rev. SoRelle as organizing pastor; and the Service of Organization of a Presbyterian Church was held at Robertson Avenue Baptist Church on April 1, 1965. The congregation called Rev. SoRelle as the first pastor, and he was installed on World Communion Sunday, October 3, 1965.
After the 'southern branch,' Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS), and the 'northern branch,'United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (UPCUSA), reunited in 1983 as Presbyterian Church U.S.A. (PCUSA), the Copperas Cove church was renamed 'First United Presbyterian Church.' The church returned to the name 'First Presbyterian Church' in 2008.
The congregation rented a house at 501 Turner Street and began meeting there on November 8, 1964. In August 1965 the congregation obtained a loan to purchase six lots in the Nauert Addition. A ground-breaking ceremony was held on March 27, 1966 and the church was dedicated on World Communion Sunday, October 2, 1966. The congregation continued to improve the property with several additions and projects. A Building Committee formed in 1991, and on January 16, 1994 the congregation broke ground for a 3,500 square foot addition. The new addition was completed and dedicated in 1995.
Over the years, the community of believers, has served to support each other and to bring the love of Jesus Christ to the Copperas Cove community, the nation and the world. The church has been served by 12 pastors including the current, Rev. Naomi Ingrim. Indeed at FPC-CC, by the grace of God in Jesus Christ, the Spirit leads us to magnify the Lord, grow disciples and meet human need.
